So….we were offline for quite a while to facilitate this migration.  The blog will be updated often so check back often.  We have some exciting new pages  and information coming up!

Since I last wrote, SO much has happened.  We launched the project.  We have a video of that on our Facebook fan page so check it out until the YouTube is ready (http://www.facebook.com/rotaryracetoliteracy)

What did we launch?  In a nutshell, we were inspired by the 2008 Rotary International Convention where Rotarians set the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for the Most Books Donated to Charity in 7 days - 242,624 books.  Well. since Rotary District 7020 will be having a conference in May 2010 in Kingston Jamaica, a service project has been designed for the conference to encourage as many book donations as possible in a 7 day period.  BUT start gathering those books now!  Want an idea of what we are trying to do – check out this short video from Rotary International that shows you the book drive in 2008 ( http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/convention08_bookdrive.aspx )

Under the H E L P categories

• H – Home: We have those book pledges coming in from individuals and organizations doing staff book drives – across Jamaica and even from the US.   VIPs will be making donations from their personal collections so look out for that.
• E – Explain: Our social media campaign is kicking into gear, and we are getting some good print coverage so far.  Word is spreading throughout Jamaica, throughout the District, RI and the US and beyond.  We even got well wishes from Sweden!  Check this out in the Gleaner.  Donate a Book to a Child
• L – Lend a Hand. We have pages and pages of names – and we welcome more.  We have drop off points and enabling partners – publishers, storage, transport, shipping etc.
• P – Pocket. Thanks to Supreme Ventures and the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica, we have some money to buy children’s books.  But we still need much more.  We have limited time to order mass quantities so please make those donations as soon as you can.
